Background

Wilson School

The Chapel of the cross project entails the construction of Church by using art. The project is to rebuild the Church which is damaged due to some natural calamities and to connect with existing building. This project is a comprehensive construction undertaking featuring of structural and architectural elements. The scope of work of the project included the engineering and detailing outputs for steel fabrication and erection of the structure.

Scope of Work

Structural steel detailing(main steels, Anchor bolts, embeds, elevator steels, concrete pour stoppers, tie back supports, plate girders, back trusses, roof trusses, theater steels, screen walls supports, monumental stair steels, auditorium framing steels, penthouse) & coordination with other venders.

Project Description

Project stated with bid drawings. Later we received the continuous revisions like 65% set, 95% set, 100% set(IFC), Bulletin 2, 6, 8, 9.2 & 10. We have raised more number of RFI’s up to 500+ questions since bid drawings start up & submittals up to 300+.

Project having 5 bars(areas) & each bar is rotated by 22.5 degrees like feeler gage. Consists of theater low framing, ground level, theater balcony, floor level 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, roof & penthouse.

Criticals

  • Since the steels are heavy & building rotated by 22.5 degrees, steels are having heavy loads up to 1210 & 2185K at couple of locations, connection design & connections are complex.
  • Steels are skewed at corner rotation of building & make sure 100% error free in steels erection in site.
  • Concrete pour stoppers are little complex at corners due to skew/rotation of each area.
  • Multiple check lists prepared to handle this project as we are getting continuous design changes, RFI responses, GC RFI's, approval returns, drawings for approval, fabrication, fab holds, steels void due to changes, ABM revisions & so on.
  • Detailing the corner embeds where steels are connecting to elevator walls including the shop welded rebars with rebar couplers & reinforcement bars.
  • Connections are complex especially in trusses & plate girders.
  • Detailed around 17 trusses & approximate tonnage of each truss is about 10 to 25 tons.

Challenges

Handling continuous day to day design drawing revisions, approvals, fab releases, listing the affected/impacted assemblies which were already released for fab, holding the assemblies from fab, Void steels, approval return packages, connection design changes due to load revisions, changes in pour stopper edge of slab dimensions, erection feasibilities due to skewed steels, tracking RFI responses including GC RFI’s, holding the assemblies for fabrication due to pending RFI responses, checking the fab status continuously prior to release the revised drawings for fabrication & making the field work drawings per customer direction based on the steel status.

Special

Overall project revision change hours went upto more than 2- times the initial project bid hours.

Learning Things

This project is very special & learnt about how to handle the project with multiple/continuous day to day revisions, responses, deliveries, shop revisions, holds & so on.

Erection feasibilities due to skewed steels.

This is the first project we done with Banker Steel company with new shop standards/requirements.
