Project Description

This project involves in installation of new SCR structure units UNIT-2, 3, 7 & 8 to the existing units making total 9 active units. All the members are the part of the seismic force resisting systems and forces are based on factored load combinations for the use with the strength design methodology per aisc 360-16 (LRFD) making the connection design more complex.

Challenges

All columns for major structures we detailed complex base plate with vertical brace connection and welds designed to resist a minimum eccentric gravity load of 300 pounds.

Truss connections with very big gusset and bolt rows due to larger loads.

All the connection are designed to slip critical conditioned and providing faying surfaces (near/far/both sides) for all the holes was challenging.

Every Friday’s we wanted to submit one seq drawings for approval and one seq fabrication to meet the 20 week project schedule.

Upgrades

In house automation : By using our Auto connection applicator we were able to automate

  • 1606 shear connections
  • 1045 HB Connections
  • 156 VB Connections

Auto Cloning Due to similarity between two SCR structures we made auto cloning from unit 7 & 8 assemblies to the unit 2 & 3, due to this cloning 70% of editing work reduced for unit 2 & 3.

In house design report check In this project we used our design report check application for beams, HB and VB connections.

Also, we used our application tool check edge distance, set back, washer quantity, material encroachment/grades and many more. With this reports checking, we were able to model check 100% without opening tekla structures.
